For publishers · Trail clubs

Your club’s trail maps, on every hiker’s phone.

Upload the GeoPDF maps your club already makes. Hikers get them on their phone, see their GPS position on your map with no signal, and hear from you when a trail is rerouted. Sell them to raise money for the club, or give them away.

No monthly fee. Cartahaven keeps 20% of each paid sale (at least $0.50); free maps cost nothing.

Who it’s for

  • Volunteer trail clubs and trail conferences that print or sell trail maps
  • Land trusts and conservancies with a preserve or a trail network
  • Long-trail and greenway associations with a series of section maps
  • Mountain bike, equestrian and ski-touring clubs with their own maps

How it works

  1. Upload your maps

Drop a folder of GeoPDFs into the bulk uploader. Each georeferenced file becomes a draft with its area read from the PDF; a scan without georeferencing can be placed on the map in the browser.

  2. Set a price, or make it free

Price each map, sell a set of section maps as a bundle, or set it to free. Free maps cost the club nothing.

  3. Give members their maps

Use a member list or a join link to give members your maps at no charge, or hand out access codes at a meeting or on a membership card.

  4. Put a QR sign at the trailhead

Print the sign from your dashboard. A hiker scans it, gets the map, and has it offline before they lose signal.

What you get

Free or paid, your choice

No fee on free maps. On paid maps the club keeps most of each sale, paid to its own Stripe account, with no monthly fee.

Member lists and join links

Give your maps to members, volunteers or a trail crew without making them public: a member list, a join link, or access codes. Included with your store.

Notices for reroutes and closures

Post a reroute, a washed-out bridge or a closure on a map: it reaches owners’ phones, pinned on the map and kept offline.

New editions, free to owners

Upload next year’s edition and everyone who has the map gets it free, with a note of what changed, or set an upgrade price for a major revision.

QR signs and embeds

Printable trailhead and kiosk signs for every map, and a copy-paste map card for the club’s website.

Bundles

Sell a whole trail series or region at one price.

Trail crews: Cartahaven Teams

For the crew rather than the public, Cartahaven Teams is a private map library: required maps download to every crew phone by themselves, a work log form records downed trees and drainage work with photos, and it all comes back to one map. Teams is a separate subscription; your store’s member lists stay free.

A whole number

Our assumption: 30% for an in-app purchase. Change it.

What the publisher keeps at $9.99 a map and 20 sales a month
StorePer saleA monthA year
Cartahaven$7.99$159.80$1,917.60
Avenza Map Store split$3.50$70.00$840.00

You keep 80% of the price on Cartahaven, against 35% under Avenza’s split with a 30% cut first.

How this is worked out
  • Cartahaven: price − fee, where the fee is 20% of the price, at least $0.50, rounded to the cent. Card processing is included in the fee. You keep 80% (less on maps under $2.50, where the $0.50 minimum applies).
  • Avenza: (price − the app store or card cut) × 50%. Avenza’s Map Store Publisher Agreement gives the publisher “50% of the net of all amounts received… net of any taxes, refunds, credits, commissions, Affiliate fees, Processor fees and other costs” (agreement, PDF). It doesn’t say how big those cuts are, so the cut is yours to set: Apple and Google take a commission on in-app purchases, and a card processor takes a few percent on a web sale. We assume no taxes, refunds or affiliate fees, which would only lower the Avenza figure.
  • Avenza pays out on request by email, at a minimum of $100 (same agreement). Cartahaven pays your share to your Stripe account on each sale.
  • Avenza’s Map Store is not taking new publishers or new map uploads (publisher FAQ), so this comparison is for publishers already selling there. Sales tax collected at checkout is separate on both.
  • Sales a month is your guess; we don’t predict sales.

Questions

Do our members need to pay for an app?
No. The Cartahaven map app is free and runs in the phone’s browser today, where it installs to the home screen and works offline. Android and iPhone apps are on the way.
Can we keep selling our printed maps?
Yes. Publishing here is non-exclusive, and you keep your copyright. Many clubs sell both; a QR code on the printed map can point to the digital one.
What if our maps are not georeferenced?
Upload them anyway. In the dashboard you place a scan by matching three or more spots on it to a world map; the store then saves it as a georeferenced map.
How do we give maps to members for free and still sell them to everyone else?
Keep the map paid in the store, and give it to members through a member list, join link or access codes. Members get it at no charge; the public pays the listed price.
