For publishers · Hunting map makers

Sell hunting maps that work where there’s no signal.

Unit maps, access and walk-in area maps, public and private land maps: upload the GeoPDFs you make, set your prices, and hunters see their GPS position on your map with no cell service. Each season’s edition reaches past buyers by itself.

No monthly fee. Cartahaven keeps 20% of each paid sale (at least $0.50); free maps cost nothing.

Who it’s for

  • Independent cartographers who make hunting unit and land-ownership maps
  • Outfitters and guides who make maps of their areas for clients
  • Hunting and conservation organizations with access or walk-in maps
  • Map shops moving a hunting catalog from another store

How it works

  1. Upload a season’s maps

Bulk-upload a folder of GeoPDFs. The area of each map is read from the file; set the kind of map to “Hunting & fishing” and add hunting as an activity so hunters find it.

  2. Label the edition

Give each edition a label, a valid-from date and an expiry date. Schedule next season’s edition ahead of time and it goes live on its date.

  3. Hunters buy and download

They buy once on the web, then open the map in the Cartahaven app, where it works offline with the GPS dot on it.

  4. Keep them up to date

Post a closure or a road change as a notice on the map, and publish the next edition: owners are emailed, and an expired edition is flagged on its page.

What you get

Editions with dates

Valid-from and expiry dates for each edition, free updates for owners or a set upgrade price for a new season, and downloads reported per edition.

Hunting unit lines in the app

The map app draws game management units, hunt areas and deer zones from the state agencies for 36 states over your map, free, with legal shooting light for the day. With Plus, hunters add solunar times, a scent cone and landowner permission notes.

Found from the unit pages

Each hunting unit page lists the store maps that cover that unit, next to its boundary and shooting light.

Notices for closures

Fire closures, gated roads and access changes reach owners’ phones as notices pinned on your map, kept offline.

Previews and legends

Buyers zoom into a watermarked preview of the whole sheet before they buy, and your legend goes to the app with the map.

Bundles and codes

Sell every unit you cover as one bundle, run promo codes before the season, and give access codes to clients or members.

What the publisher keeps at $12.99 a map and 30 sales a month
StorePer saleA monthA year
Cartahaven$10.39$311.70$3,740.40
Avenza Map Store split$4.55$136.50$1,638.00

You keep 80% of the price on Cartahaven, against 35% under Avenza’s split with a 30% cut first.

How this is worked out
  • Cartahaven: price − fee, where the fee is 20% of the price, at least $0.50, rounded to the cent. Card processing is included in the fee. You keep 80% (less on maps under $2.50, where the $0.50 minimum applies).
  • Avenza: (price − the app store or card cut) × 50%. Avenza’s Map Store Publisher Agreement gives the publisher “50% of the net of all amounts received… net of any taxes, refunds, credits, commissions, Affiliate fees, Processor fees and other costs” (agreement, PDF). It doesn’t say how big those cuts are, so the cut is yours to set: Apple and Google take a commission on in-app purchases, and a card processor takes a few percent on a web sale. We assume no taxes, refunds or affiliate fees, which would only lower the Avenza figure.
  • Avenza pays out on request by email, at a minimum of $100 (same agreement). Cartahaven pays your share to your Stripe account on each sale.
  • Avenza’s Map Store is not taking new publishers or new map uploads (publisher FAQ), so this comparison is for publishers already selling there. Sales tax collected at checkout is separate on both.
  • Sales a month is your guess; we don’t predict sales.

Questions

Do I have to add the hunting unit lines to my map?
No. The app shows the state agency’s unit lines as a layer over any map with location data, for the 36 states it covers. Your map can show whatever you draw on it.
What happens to last season’s buyers?
You choose: give them the new edition free, or set an upgrade price that past buyers pay instead of the full price. Everyone keeps the edition they have.
Can I sell parcel or ownership maps?
Yes, if you have the right to publish the data on them. You keep your copyright and are responsible for what is on your maps; see the publisher terms.
Where do hunters find season dates?
Not from us: each state hunting page links to the agency’s own regulations, season dates and draw pages.
