GeoPDF maps on iPhone, offline with GPS
The Cartahaven iPhone app is on the way; it is not in the App Store yet. You don’t have to wait: the web app opens GeoPDF maps on iPhone and iPad today, free, and shows your GPS position on them with no cell signal.

Set it up on iPhone
- Open app.cartahaven.com in Safari.
- Tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
- Open Cartahaven from the Home Screen, and do everything from there: maps saved in Safari and maps saved in the Home Screen app are kept apart.
- Tap Import and choose a GeoPDF from Files (iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or a file you saved from Mail or Safari), up to 500 MB. Your position shows on it straight away.
- Turn on airplane mode and open the map once, to make sure it is on the phone before you lose signal.
What works on iPhone today
- GeoPDFs and georeferenced PDF map books, GeoTIFFs, and scans you place yourself (how), all free.
- Your GPS position on the map with no signal, track recording, placemarks with photos, and GPX, KML or GeoJSON export.
- Maps from the store, free or paid: get them on the website, then “Get my maps” in the app.
- A background map, elevation and US public land boundaries saved around each map; offline satellite imagery and weather radar with Plus ($9.99 a year).
- The free field tools: a UTM or MGRS grid, walking a bearing, “Where am I, in words”, red-light night mode, voice cues and trip check-in, plus wildfires and avalanche danger over the map.
Limits of the web app on iPhone
- Screen off: iPhone stops GPS for a web app when the screen locks or you switch apps. While you record a track the web app keeps the screen on; dim it to save battery.
- Storage: deleting the Home Screen app, or clearing Safari’s website data, removes the maps from that phone. Store maps download again from “My purchases”; sign in with backup on to keep your tracks and placemarks.
- Very large maps: files over about 250 MB are best on a recent iPhone or an iPad; older iPhones may not open them.
These are limits of web apps on iPhone, not of the maps.

Questions
Is there a Cartahaven app in the App Store?
Not yet. It is on the way. Until then the web app works on iPhone and iPad in Safari and installs to the Home Screen.
Is opening my own GeoPDFs free on iPhone?
Yes, with no limit on how many. Plus is optional.
Does it work without cell signal?
Yes, once the map is on the phone. GPS works from satellites. Open each map once before you go.
Will my maps move to the iPhone app?
Store maps are tied to your account and download again in any app you sign in to. Maps you imported yourself are files on your phone; import them again in the new app, and sign in with backup on to bring your tracks and placemarks.
