Why a GeoPDF Won’t Show Your Position (and How to Fix It)

Last checked

You opened your map, and there’s no dot showing where you are. A few things usually cause this, and most take a minute to rule out. Start with the first one: it’s the most common, and it’s the quickest to check.

The PDF has no location data

A plain PDF of a map looks exactly like a GeoPDF, but it holds only the picture, so no app can place you on it. Scans and maps exported as ordinary PDFs are usually like this. Drop the file into the free GeoPDF checker to find out in a few seconds.

If it has no location data, look for a geospatial version from the publisher, or add location to it yourself by matching a few points to a map.

You opened it in a plain PDF reader

A regular PDF reader shows the picture and ignores the coordinates. To see your position, open the file in a GeoPDF viewer. The Cartahaven map app is free for your own files and needs no account.

You’re not on the map

The file only covers its own area. If you’re at home planning a trip, you won’t be on the sheet, and that’s normal. The checker shows the area a file covers, so you can confirm it’s the one you meant to bring.

The app can’t get your location

  • Check that location is on for your phone, and allowed for the app or browser you’re using.
  • Step outside. GPS needs a view of the sky, and a first fix can take a little while, especially after a long drive with the phone off.
  • You don’t need cell signal. GPS works from satellites, so this isn’t what’s stopping it.

It’s a map book, and this page has no location data

In a multi-page PDF, a cover or index page often has no location data even when the map pages do. The checker tells you how many pages have it.

The file is locked or uses an older format

  • Password: a PDF that needs a password to open can’t be read. Save a copy without the open password.
  • Older GeoPDF formats: some older files use a TerraGo format in a projection we can’t read yet. Exporting again as a geospatial PDF from QGIS, ArcGIS or Global Mapper fixes that. See how to make a GeoPDF in QGIS.

The dot shows, but it’s in the wrong place

  • Your GPS may not have settled. Give it a minute outside and see whether it moves.
  • The map may be placed by hand. A map placed with a few points is only as good as those points, and a sketch map may not line up everywhere. Add more points, spread far apart, and remove any that look off.
  • The map may be wrong. Check the dot against something you can recognize, such as a road junction or a summit.

Check your map at home with airplane mode on before a trip, and carry a backup. A phone can run out of battery or break, wherever you are.
